Magazine History:
The first two publications to be categorized as magazines were created in England by Richard Steele and Joseph Addison. The first magazines in America debuted in 1741: Benjamin Franklin's The General Magazine, and Historical Chronicle, For all the British Plantations in America. EBONY, founded in 1945, is the most widely circulated and most popular African American magazine, a position it has been able to maintain for more than 50 consecutive years.

Other Significant Events

*On Nov. 1, 1945, the first issue of Ebony magazine, which sold 25,000 copies, was published by John H. Johnson.  Six years later on this same day, John H. Johnson founded yet another groundbreaking publication with Jet, the only African-American weekly news magazine.

*The Black Collegian magazine launched in 1970 and quickly became a prominent leader of career and self-development targeting African-American students and other students of color seeking information on careers, job opportunities, graduate/professional school, internships/co-ops, study abroad programs, etc.

Newspaper History:
In the early stages of print newspapers weren't accessible by every body because of their financial status. So in 1833 Benjamin Day presented the Penny Press Papers where newspapers would only cost a penny instead of the regular price of six cents. The first Penny Press papers would sold on street corners by young boys called "Newsies," who yell out "EXTRA, EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT." The Penny Press foreshadowed modern journalism by using sensationalism to attract their readers and keep them coming back every morning to buy their papers.

National News

Gannett Company. Incorporated:
Gannett Co. Inc. is an international news and informational company that was founded in 1906 by Frank Gannett. This company publishes 90 daily newspapers, including USA TODAY and nearly 1,000 non-daily publications. Gannett Co. is the largest newspaper publisher in the United States and also runs publications in the UK.

USA TODAY:
Their goal is to provide an alternative to usual colorless papers. USA TODAY was founded September 15, 1982 and is known for synthesizing news down to easy-to-read-and-comprehend stories. USA TODAY is well-known for it's national polls on public sentiment and having their paper widely distributed newspaper in the country.(Distributed in all 50 states)

Local News

The Cincinnati Enquirer:
The Cincinnati Enquirer was first published on April 10th, 1841 and it was one of the first newspapers in the U.S. to publish a sunday edition on April 20, 1848. The Enquirer also has the highest circulation print publication in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky (The Kentucky Enquirer).

The Post:
Founded January 3, 1881, this afternoon daily newspaper, published in Cincinnati, OH, was originally called the The Penny Post. In 1977 The Post entered a joint operating agreement with the Cincinnati Enquirer but in the year 2008 The Post will be discontinued.

The Cincinnati Herald:
The Cincinnati Herald was founded in 1955 by Gerald Porter and after Porter past away his step-son Bill Spillers took over. According to Bill Spillers "The Herald's main purpose as a newspaper is to take the general news as it relates to the black community and really tell the black community what that means in the community." In 1996, The Herald was sold to the African American owned SESH Communications. In the year 2007 it continues to be voices in Cincinnati for the African American community.

Other Significant Events

*Freedom’s Journal, the first African-American owned and operated newspaper published in the United States. The Journal was published weekly in New York City from 1827 to 1829.

*Founded on August 3, 1928 by William A. Scott, III, the Atlanta Daily World was the first Black daily newspaper in modern times.

First published on April 10, 1841, The Enquirer, a daily morning newspaper, became one of the first newspapers in the United State to publish a Sunday edition.  It is the highest-circulation print publication in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.  .  Today, The Enquirer publishes a variety of print media including separate editions for Ohio and Kentucky, 17 Community Press weekly newspapers, 10 Community Recorder weekly newspapers and four genre magazines amongst a host of other electronic media and free-distribution advertising publications.

In October 2003, The Enquirer began publishing and distributing CiN Weekly, a free lifestyle magazine aimed at younger readers.  It competes with CityBeat, a free weekly independent local arts and issues publication covering the Cincinnati area.  Founded in November 1994 by local entrepreneur Thomas Schiff and John Fox, CityBeat has the second largest readership in the area behind The Enquirer. CityBeat has won numerous national, statewide and local journalism and design awards, most recently being named Best Weekly Paper in the state of Ohio in 2005 by the Society of Professional Journalists.
