Internet History
Before the Internet
Around the late 1950's early 60's communication between businesses and networks were limited between the stations. Some networks have gateways or bridges between them, but these bridges were often limited or built for a single use. Terminals were connected by long leased lines or telephone lines. The progress of the internet being created was held up because of the Cold War but it was finally developed in the late 1980s. As the spread of the internet and networks grew so did the bridges between companies and organizations. This became a problem because there were too many networks to keep track of. Vint Cerf was sent in to fix the problem that networks were having. He discovered that there were hidden differences between network protocols were hidden by using a common internetwork protocol, and instead of the network being responsible for reliability, as in the ARPANET, the hosts became responsible.. The launch of Sputnik increased the U.S. lead in the Arms Race. In the early 1970's the protocol of the TCP/IP was created. This organized all of the networks and put them in groups under major corporations. In the year of 1992 the World Wide Web was released by the CERN Corporation.
National History
*1957 - USSR launches Sputnik the first earth satellite
*1973 - The protocol TCP/IP was created
*1974 - The term Internet was first used by Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn
*1992 - World Wide Web was released by CREN
*In November of 1995, The Black Collegian Online began reaching a much larger audience with even more web-based information for the smooth transition from college to a successful career.
*On Feb. 3, 1999, The Cyber-Youth Network launched the nation’s first fully interactive website specifically designed for African-American students, teachers and parents providing a model for online education by offering culturally relevant material that is both educational and entertaining.
Local History
*WCPO is a pioneer in yet another way: branching out to multiple platforms. The first site went online in August 1996 and was the first Cincinnati entity to have updated news over the Internet. In 1998, WCPO launched CinciNow.com, one of the first fully-staffed local TV sites in the country. Staff members quickly became the first (and still only) Cincinnati station to stream and archive all of its newscasts online. In 2002, WCPO returned to WCPO.com, but continues innovation by now providing news and weather information via cell phones and iPods.
*On November 1, 1996, The Enquirer initiated daily publication of a free Internet edition containing most of the local content produced by its reporters, photographers and columnists. The Enquirer also launched GoCinci.net to represent content from The Enquirer and the afternoon daily, The Cincinnati Post. In August 1998, The Enquirer renamed its web site Cincinnati.com as its flagship electronic product. In October 2005, The Enquirer also launched NKY.com, a site covering news from Northern Kentucky. This was one of the first newspaper-published web sites to make extensive use of user-created content, featured prominently on its 38 community pages.
